Militaria Collectibles... What's Left of the War

Dad was a World War II POW.  He was in the Army Air Corps and flew the P-38.  Dad was shot down early in the war and endured prison camp for almost the entire war years.  He was a "participant" in the Bataan Death March.  He survived.  And I remember.

I remember, not for some morbid or angry return bitterness or hatred or the war year's unreconciled parts; but to honor my father's service when called upon by his country.  His service allow me the freedom to worship the God I choose, or none.  But I do get that choice.  I don't have to dress the way the state tells me.  I am permitted to live where I desire.  I can do the kind of work I find meaningful and preferable.  I can have the number of children I want to have.

My dad, and many others like him, stepped up and fought to protect and defend the values of liberty I get to enjoy.  So, collecting original period militaria items is an easy step for me.  It helps me remember.  It connects me to my Dad and other heroes who are no longer here with me.  Militaria simply connects me to a time and place.  Hopefully, I'm learning some things, too.  It can teach me important lessons so that I can see the warning signs and be one strong voice in support of freedom.

I don't know about you, but just a quick look at a photo of an actual battle scene touches a nerve.  The price men and women paid!  Kamikaze attack april 01 1945 And not only those engaged in the battle, but also consider the cost to their families, partners, and lovers.  Many of those that came home were permanently injured.  Dad was.  Some who escaped physical calamity were not so lucky on the psychological front.  Then there are the thousands who never returned at all. Militaria is such a wonderful collectible to bring historic events even on just your imagination.

Thank you for your service to the United States of America you brave men and women throughout our nation's life.  I remember!  May we never forget all you have done for our country and us.
