I'm 5ft 5in, will a large frame ALICE pack be to big for me?
I'm going to be spending 2 weeks in the wilderness so I need a bigger pack. Trusting to the phrase "simplicity is beauty" I'm looking into the US MIL issue ALICE pack but I'm a bit worried the large frame may not distribute weight on my small build.
I'm 5'6" and carried an ALICE pack in the Marines. The frame is good IF you are not wearing a belt with alot of gear on it like canteens, etc. Whether using the frame or not, I found out the straps are spaced for larger people, so after putting the pack on and tightening the straps, I would tie the free ends together in front of me to pull the straps closer together. This prevented the straps from sliding off my shoulders.
Also, when tightening the straps, lean forward and use your legs to pitch the pack higher on your back as you pull the free ends of the straps. This puts the pack at a better position on your back and will pay off on long hikes.
The large pack is probably more than you need. I recommend carrying the regular size and attaching stuff to it. Instead of a full-size sleeping bag, get a poncho and ponho liner. You can tie the liner in the poncho then fold it over in half and you have an excellent lightweight sleeping bag that takes up less than 1/3 the space of the sleeping bag.
I also recommend that you do a couple of one-day hikes with and without the frame to decide which suits you better. I've known people with opposite preferences.
