Army Sake
Say Hey' to Heroes!
I have been thinking a lot about the word 'hero' lately. Last week it was Yom HaZikaron la'Shoah ve-la'G'vurah; "Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day", known colloquially in Israel and abroad as Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Holocaust Day. It is observed as Israel's day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust.
Yom HaShoah was inaugurated in 1953, anchored in a law signed by the Prime Minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion. The original proposal was to hold Yom HaShoah on the 14th of Nisan, the anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising (April 19, 1943), but this was problematic because the 14th of Nisan is the day immediately before Pesach (Passover). The date was moved to the 27th of Nisan, which is eight days before Yom Haatzmaut, or Israeli Independence Day. Ceremonies are held at Yad Vashem and elsewhere throughout Israel and At 10 a.m. on Yom HaShoah, sirens are sounded throughout Israel for two minutes. During this time, people cease from action and stand at attention; cars stop, even on the highways; and the whole country comes to a standstill as people pay silent tribute to the dead. The same siren sounds again a week later on Yom Hazikaron (the day preceding Independence Day) for those who fell defending Israel in the Israeli Army and Security Forces. On Yom Hazikaron one siren sounds in the evening and another the next morning. Once again, all of Israel comes to a halt to honor those who fell protecting the country.
But I wonder about the term 'heroes'. In the early days of the state of Israel perhaps the 'heroism' part was stressed. Here was a nation, Israel, built up after emerging from the horrors of the Holocaust and many felt the need to stress the 'heroism' aspect on Yom Hashoa, hence the addition of 'Ve'hagvurah' (heroism) to the name of the day. The day that was chosen to mark it was the date closest to the start of the ghetto uprising. In other parts of the world, the International Holocaust Memorial Day is observed on January 27th, the anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
I was watching an interview show on Israeli TV the other day and the host interviewed a commander in the IDF and played word association with him. When she said the word 'hero' he immediately replied, "Roi Klein". Roi Klein was a Major in the Golani Brigade of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Klein was killed in the Battle of Bint Jbeil during the 2006 Lebanon War after jumping on a grenade to save his fellow soldiers. The soldiers reported that Klein recited the Jewish prayer, Shema Yisrael, as he jumped on the grenade killing himself but saving the other soldiers in his unit, who would certainly have died had he not protected them with his body.
Other heroes that come to mind are the American Special Forces Team that went into Pakistan last week and carried out a dangerous operation that killed mega-terrorist Osama Bin-Laden. An operation like that had many risks, and fortunately none of the Americans was harmed.
Undoubtedly, we have many sources and many places where we can find heroes. From out of the horrors of the Holocaust to the front lines of Israel's boarders, to those that stormed the fortress in Pakistan, we can certainly call them all 'heroes'. My question is this: must one put one's life on the line to be a 'hero'? Of course one who does risk their life (or give it) for the sake of others is a 'hero', but are there everyday heroes among us? Can anyone be 'a hero'?
Some people say teachers are heroes. Other heroes include those who give of their time for charity work. The thing is, if you looked you could probably find many local 'heroes' in your neighborhood, but the real heroes are usually very modest types. They don't wear a red cape with an 'S' on it. They don't fly around rescuing people. They are just regular people who help other people. Anybody can be hero, really.
Friday was the 80th birthday of one of the all-time great baseball players in history, Willie Mays. I may be biased as I was born and raised in the San Francisco area and am a fan of the Giants team (although Wille Mays retired from the Giants before I was born). What makes him so legendary? Of course there are the statistics: 660 career home runs, 24 All-Star Games, 2 MVP awards, and his being elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. The Giants new stadium in downtown San Francisco honored him with a statue in front of the ballpark which is located at 24 (his uniform number) Willie Mays Plaza. In fact, many fans rather than call the ballpark AT&T Park, prefer to call it 'Mays Field'.
Willie Mays lead a clean life inside and outside of baseball (that's not so true for other players). But one thing I notice about Willie 'The Say Hey Kid' Mays, is that throughout his career and even today at the age of 80, he is always smiling. He still helps out young ballplayers with advice and appears at events and signs autographs. Still, in every photo I have ever seen with him it seems like he is smiling. His warmth seems to radiate to all who come in contact with him.
In Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, we are told that at age 80 one receives 'gvurah', special strength. How can this be? At age 80 most people are retired and taking it easy. One thing most people don't have at age 80 is 'special strength'.
My theory is that if you reach the age of 80 and you have made a contribution to others in life, if you are still smiling and if people smile just thinking about you (like many of us do when we think of Willie Mays), well that's a 'special strength' you have achieved.
In Hebrew, a 'gibor' is a hero, at 80 does one really achieve 'gevurah', heroism? Elsewhere in Pirkei Avot it says, 'Who is a gibor? One who conquers his desires. Does that mean at age 80 one has conquered one's desires? Not necessarily, but maybe you have learned to contain yourself, to not let things bother you. To just smile, a smile that gives others strength.
As we honor heroes of the past and present this week, let's also try to be heroes to others. Help, volunter, and reach out to others.
And you know what, if that's too tough, there is something very simple you can do. Maybe someone you know (or don't know) has had a bad day. You know how you can 'pick them up'? Well, you can be like Willie. Smile.

History shows that Pakistan Army has fought only for the sake of religion. So is it halal for an Indian Army Muslim to fight against them? No offence intended.
Well first of all war is stupid. The fighters don't really have a say in what they should fight for.
War is to protect your country. Few countries wage war simply to protect their countries, but mostly to get benefits and control of more land.
That said, even though Pakistan is a mostly-Muslim state, it is not entirely Islamic. The politics are screwed up beyond reasoning, and the decisions the Pakistani govt makes shouldn't tell soldiers what to fight for. The ones that benefit are the rich and corrupt.
And no army in this world has a right to call themselves "Muslim". And the Pakistani army should lower their heads in the face of the genocide and mass rape they did in Bangladesh in 1971. That said, every modern army has something to be ashamed of.
I know this is not an easy question to answer. But in brief you have to realize that things are much more complicated now than they were during the Prophet Muhammad's time. It's not as easy as "good" or "bad", but more about "who is good?" and "who is bad?" And this is a question humanity, even Muslims, can't agree on.
