Don't listen to those negative comments! Good for you for writing a novel -- it's not an easy task!
Hmm...stupidity and the World today. It sounds like it could be really insightful and interesting.
What about the effect of the media on people? How high school girls try to emulate celebrities -- focussing more on their weight and makeup than their grade?
Or about stupid laws? Like the bans against gay marriage and how you think it will be lawed that everyone will be able to get married one day (if you do).
It's sort of hard to think of these, I'm not sure if I'm on the right track with what you're writing about...if you edit your question I will be happy to check back and try to help you out a bit more!
Most importantly remember: those who can't do...criticize! That's why your the one writing the book and these losers are the ones putting you down for it!
Also: I believe 20,000 words would classify your book as a novella, which is actually a great place to start...it's hard to dive right into a 80,000 novel. And yes, it is around 250 words/page for a paperback!
