Activities /events for people who like Portuguese language in San Francisco

The frosty summer fogs, surging hills and the distinct mix of modern and Victorian architecture are what make the city of San Francisco a popular tourist destination. The large number of immigrants from Asia and Latin America especially makes the people of San Francisco liberal minded and cosmopolitan.

One of the major languages in the world, there are many speakers of Portuguese in North America. While taking Portuguese classes in San Francisco, there are lots things in Portuguese that you can enjoy...

San Pablo Portuguese Festa

The festival of the Holy Spirit is a big event for the people of Portugal and is celebrated in June. The festa begins with a parade where bagpipers play and the women are seen balancing huge rolls on their head and move in a procession to the local church. The rolls are distributed to the onlookers. Coffee, wine, soft drinks, massa sovada and Portuguese filhos (donuts) are also on sale.

Dia De Portugal Festival

Organised by the Portuguese Heritage Society of California, this festival celebrates Portuguese culture and is conducted every second Saturday in the month of June at San Jose History Park. With fun activities, a book fair, food and drink, live entertainment and children's carnival, it's a fun-filled day of festivity for the entire family. The Portuguese Museum is nearby where you get to see many things related to Portugal.

Portuguese courses at San Francisco

For those wanting to explore the nuances of Portuguese language, Cactus language training offers Portuguese evening courses at a range of levels that develop fluency and confidence in the individual. The course materials are interesting and the classes are made lively by qualified and experienced teachers.

Film Festivals

Film festivals are the right places to watch for contemporary Portuguese films. The San Francisco International Film festival premiers many Portuguese films. Other than that many cinemas in the area show international movies which can be enjoyed with family and friends at weekends or in the evenings.

Portuguese Restaurants

No activity or event in Portuguese will be complete without tasting their cuisine. San Francisco offers many opportunities for lovers of Portuguese cuisine to taste their Bife a Portuguesa or Calde Verde. Here are some of the best Portuguese restaurants in San Francisco:

Grubstake

Horatius

Sun Stream Coffee

Gitane

Gary Danko

Meet up Groups and Book Clubs

Meet up groups are the best ways to experience the Portuguese culture and spirit in its true sense. They also help in improving your language and in sharing your knowledge with others.

About the Author

Hi I am Jancy James passionate about languages and is currently working for Cactus Language Training

Which lanaguage should I learn, Japanese or Portuguese?

I once tried to learn Japanese by myself but the method I taught myself didn't work out too well.
I have a Portuguese learning book but I don't know wether to learn Portuguese or Japanese first.
I promised my Portuguese friend that I'd learn Portguese but I've always wanted to learn Japanese.
What should I do?

Learn both, it's not impossible and they're totally different languages so you won't mix them up.
I would suggest starting with one first, then starting the other some months (maybe 6 or so) down the road.
You will need to organize your study time. Say you have 2 hours a day free monday-friday, start one language first and use those 2 hours during the weekdays to study it. On weekends say you have 3-4 hours to study, continue to study that one language. Six months of studying 2-3 hours per day should definitely get you somewhere in either language. Once you've been able to study this language for so long, then pick up the other. Now after you're studying both say use 1 hour for one language and the other hour for another. On weekends if you have 3-4 hours use 1.5-2 hours for one, and 1.5-2 hours for the other.
When studying each language, you could use 1 hour for learning new vocabulary, reading, etc. Then the next hour for speaking and practicing what you just learned, and incorporating it in with what you already know from the language. On days when you only have an hour for each, break down what you will practice/learn, or say one day work just on reading/vocab/writing, and the next day work on speaking.
