British Museum-A Collection Of History From Around The World
The British Museum is located in London and has a vast array of over 7 million artifacts. The artifacts come from all around the world and tell the story of human civilization through the ages of time. The British Museum was formed in 1753 and was opened for public viewing on the 15th of January 1759.
The British Museum has nine departments. They are namely the Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan, Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities, Department of the Middle East, Department of Prints and Drawings, Department of Asia, Department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, Department of Coins and Medals, Department of Prehistory and Europe, and the Department of Conservation, Documentation and Science. The British Museum also has a collection of pamphlets, journals, books and other reading materials held at its libraries and archives.
The Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan houses the famous Rosetta Stone and many other important artifacts. The Rosetta Stone played an important role in the decryption of Egyptian hieroglyphics. There are statues of the many pharaohs of Egypt. There are also mummies, tombs and coffins on display. Other highlights from the other departments include the Athenian Akropolis, the Bassae Sculptures,the Temple of Artemis and the Mausoleum of Halikarnossos from the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities. In addition one can also find artifacts dating back to the ancient kingdoms of Mesopotamia, the Kingdoms of Babylon, Assyria, Sumeria and other kingdoms from the Mesopotamian region at the Department of the Middle East. The Museum also has a vast collection of art pieces at its Department of Prints and Drawings.
