The exact origins of giving flowers are uncertain
The exact origins of giving flowers are uncertain, however there have been many examples demonstrating the use of flowers as symbolic or pertaining to a particular important event throughout history. Between 1957-1961, archaeologist Ralph Solecki and his team from Columbia University found the first Neanderthal skeletons dating from 60-80,000 years BP in Shanidar cave, an archaeological site based in the Zagros Mountains in Kurdistan, Iraq. Amongst the findings were the remains of bodies with remnants of pollen, which suggests that the Neanderthals buried their dead with flowers. The pollen was taken for analysis, and results showed that thevalentines flowers laid at the burial site were yarrow, grape hyacinths, St. Barnaby's thistle, cornflowers and hollyhocks.
The Ancient Greeks also dedicated flowers to the gods and crowned people of high status with wreaths of leaves and blossoms. During the mid-eighteenth century, the English and the French, who had travelled to Turkey (Turkish concubine women, many of whom could not read or communicate in written form, would use coded flowers as messages) returned home with the concept of flowers having a language, and throughout the 1800s many books were written on this subject: floriography. The books contained pictures of flowers and their various coded meanings, meaning that they could be sent to those as tokens expressing feelings such as love or grief (For unrequited love, it could be a combination of the two.) Hyacinths were a request for forgiveness, while borage symbolised courage and roses to this day are offered as a symbol of beauty, friendship and love.
The significance of flowers has also been observed in other areas of the world such as Japan, where cherry blossom is used to signify the transient nature of life due to their short blooming time and falling blossom is a metaphor for fallen warriors who died bravely in combat. This connotation closely links the symbolism of cherry blossom with the Samurai. In Greece, contrary to their popular use as funereal flowers in the UK (Where interestingly, they have had a history of representing lightness and beauty), lilies are used in marriage ceremonies as a crown for the bride.Flowers are also used in the Day of the Dead in Mexico, where marigolds are used to honour the deceased and to celebrate their life in a carnivalof colour. However, one countries interpretation of certain flowers can be different to another's. While red is commonly associated with love, in some cultures it can either be interpreted as a sign of indecency, or is otherwise simply a source of confusion.
To this day, flowers are closely associated with important occasions. In traditional English weddings, the bouquet is peppered with baby's breath, and in US alone, 190 million red roses are sent each year. Flowers are used internationally for different cultural events, and each country attributes a particular meaning to different varieties of flowers, all of which have a scent, colour or appearance particular to them which evokes an emotion or signifies an important event.

Commercialism took over and made it a day to remember all the dead (Veteran or not).
Stores and businesses used to close,now they treat is as another work day and "Special Sale" day.
