When you think of patches, what comes to mind? A way to repair holes in bicycle tires? Something that fixes a computer glitch? Something that covers a hole in a tent? Yes, all those are considered patches, but far more common are embroidered patches.
Custom embroidered designs have myriad uses in business, clubs, and organizations of all kinds. They can indicate membership in a motorcycle club, a rank within the police or fire department, and many other things.
Embroidery is an art form that has been embraced for millennia, but the digital era has revolutionized it in the past 25 years or so. The advent of microprocessor-controlled, high speed embroidery machines has made designing custom patches easier than ever before.
It's easy to create custom patches to suit just about any group or organization's needs. Any reputable seller of patches can help with the choice of embroidery percentage, color, size and backing.
Embroidered patches began as a way for military members to recognize each other. Each U.S. military branch, unit and division has its own custom patch as a way to identify specific units and their function. Police and fire departments, emergency medical response units and other public safety officials use custom patches for their own identification purposes as well.

Patches are described in terms of the percentage of backing covered by embroidery. Your design and the size of the patch will determine that percentage. A 50% embroidered patch, for example, will have half the twill covered with embroidered thread. This is good for basic, text-only designs.
The next type is the 75% embroidered patch. As the name implies, the 75% design covers more of the twill with embroidery. It's good for displaying both artwork and text on your patches. When the entire twill backing is covered with embroidery, it's referred to as a 100% embroidered patch. These are best suited for intricate designs and logos with fine detail.
With regard to color, there's a wide range of both twill and thread colors available for custom patches. A quality provider can help you select the right ones for your patches.
Backing choices include the standard sew-on or iron-on. The sew-on backing offers a more permanent attachment of patches, while the iron-on allows faster application. The iron-on backing also can be used to hold patches in place to be sewn on, keeping them straight during the process.
Velcro backing is also available, and is particularly popular for military unit patches. The Velcro allows the patches to be removed and reapplied easily. For temporary, short-term applications, tape backing allows patches to easily be removed as needed.

Question concerning CENTCOM Combat patch wear?
Ive been to Iraq once and received 2 combat patches, one for my unit and the division we were attached too. My question is, am I authorized the CENTCOM patch since they are the overall command there in Iraq? Ive had several people in my unit telling me that it is kinda an automatic patch that everyone is authorized. Ive thought about wearing one but wasn't really sure if I would be authorized to.
Might as well do it. If you get in trouble, oh well. Its no problem.
