Why there are so many different uniforms in the medical environment
When you find yourself in a medical environment, whether it is a hospital or a nursing home, you need to feel as comfortable as possible, and is up to the staff to try and give their patients and the visitors some sense of security.
Believe it or not, medical uniforms can do a lot on this aspect, not only because they help you differentiate the medical staff from visitors and other staff, but also, because they emphasize the differences between particular ranks. For example, because of their uniform, you can set apart nursing students (white dress) from nurses (clear blue), seniors nurses (blue) and sisters, NHS name for main nurse or chief nurse (very dark blue).
As you can see, even though they all use the same dress uniform, adopted in England since the very introduction of the NHS, they all use different colours to establish different levels of authority. This does a lot for organization, since you know who does what. An easily identifiable medical staff helps the public in feeling less lost in a hard situation, like having to go to hospital, or a nursing home, even if it is just to visit. It gives you that sense of security I was talking about, because you know who you are supposed to talk to, and who can help.
This is why medical uniforms are so important, in places like hospitals and nursing homes. But not only the very presence of the uniform does the trick in inspiring respect, it is mostly how it is worn, how neat they look, they must look absolutely impeccable. And the industry has gone some distance in this aspect, creating fabrics that are very easy to clean, that don't wrinkle easily and that most importantly can be more effective against cross contamination.
Talking about effective medical uniforms, nothing is bigger in the medical world that the scrubs. Originally designed for the surgical staff, its use has extended to all parts of hospital activity. This very simple garment, consist of a short sleeve shirt and trousers, and comes in a variety of colours, being the surgical blue the most popular one.
The scrubs are more popular in the USA and Canada, than in the UK, where we still maintain the dresses for the nurses and our doctors don't usually wear a uniform outside of theatre, except for some A&E staff. So remember, that you can rely on the uniform, and they are indeed indispensable in medical life.
