Being Desert Smart in Utah
How many children do you bath each day? Every bath uses approximately 50 gallons per use. Your shower sends two gallons per minute down the drain. Teeth brushing one gallon, washing your hands or face, one gallon, running your dishwasher an average of twenty gallons per load, washing them by hand, five gallons and throwing in a load of laundry, ten gallons of water per load. Washing your car requires seventy gallons of water. Traditional methods of carpet cleaning can use up to 160 gallons of water.
The Utah Division of Water Resources has stated that water conservation is imperative in order to: Delay expensive capital investments to upgrade or expand existing water facilities; Reduce sewage flows, delaying the need for more wastewater treatment facilities; Conserve energy as less water needs to be treated, pumped and distributed to the consumer; Lessen the leaching of chemicals and sediments into streams and aquifers; Reduce stream diversions, thereby enhancing water quality, environmental and recreational functions.
In the interest of conservation, Utahns have been urged to run laundry machines and dishwashers only when they are full, shorten shower time and replace showerheads and faucets with water-efficient models and use a hose nozzle or turn off the water while washing vehicles. Carpet cleaning may seem like a corner to cut in the interest of water conservation, but weighing and measuring the 160 gallons against 100,000 dust mites per square yard and more than 200,000 microbes of bacteria per square inch, well, is it a conundrum? A necessary evil? Akin to the aforementioned measures for conservation, routine carpet cleaning for a healthier home can be done water smart.
