How do you determine that coat pattern or color on a German shepherd?

I have always loved and wanted a German shepherd. Now it's time to get one.But the only thing I'm worried about is the coat color and length. I want something a little longer than short hair but not ugly and big with a extreme coat. please respond. Mainly a German shepherd like the one on my picture I.D. Thanks

Just like a Welsh shepherdess, a German shepherd can change coats as often as his wallet allows.
My canine breed's real name translates as German Shepherd Dog - 3 words in the proper noun, so 3 capital letters needed, with GSD for short.

Correct GSDs have one of just 3 coat patterns:
• wolf-sable, caused by the dominant A^w
• tan-point, caused by a^t
• self-black, caused by a pair of the recessive a^
Any of those can have a small whitish chest spot, and maybe a whitish toe or two, but all must have black leathers (eye-rims, nose, lips, pads) and black nails.
Liver, blue, Isabella, "Collie"-patches, piebald and self-white are all forbidden in GSDs.

There are modifiers that adjust how much black vs how much tan the first 2 patterns end up with. The self-blacks are, of course, black all over.
Other modifiers adjust how rich or pale the tan is.

YOU don't "determine" any of that. But by knowing the patterns and pigmentation of both parents and all 4 grand parents, the breeder can help you make some pretty good predictions, especially once the pups' coats have dried out after birth.

Coat LENGTH has nothing to do with pattern or colour, although it is common for the heavier coats to look darker, simply because there is more of the darker outer-coat to absorb light, preventing any reflection from the lighter under-coat.
• The correct coat (Stockhaar, caused by L^ when it chooses to be dominant or is homozygous as L^ L^) is harsh, flat lying, and about 50mm/2" long over the shoulders. The undercoat is dense.
• The "plush" coat (Langstockhaar, caused by the heterozygous L^ l^ when the L^ chooses to be incompletely dominant) is about 80mm/3¼" long over the shoulders and is acceptable if it has a water-proof under-coat.
• The long coat (Langhaar, caused by the recessive pairing l^ l^) is about 150mm/6" long, soft and wavy, parting over the spine. It is never acceptable for work, as its undercoat is not water-proof, and may even be absent. Such pups are called "fluffs", because their coats ARE soft & fluffy well befire their guard hairs emerge to make it quite definite that that the pup IS a long-coat.

It is the plush-coats that can keep you guessing as to whether their adult coat will be of an acceptable length and have a weather-proof under-coat.

Size/height of the adult has nothing to do with any of the above, and it is not a simple dominant-recessive feature, but an additive polygenic one. Again, a knowledgeable breeder will have selected grandparents & parents likely to produce the size range he/she wants. Unfortunately, in the USofA that is almost always BIGGER than a GSD is allowed to be.
The ABSOLUTE LIMITS of size for GSDs are:
Bit.ch: 54-61 cm & 22-32 kg (21¼-24 inches & 48½-70½ lbs)
.Dog_: 59-66 cm & 30-40 kg (23¼-26 inches & 66-88 lbs)
Height is measured to the withers vertically above the elbow.
For a First Class GSD the height range is even narrower:
Bit.ch: 55-60 cm (21⅝ to 23¾ inches)
.Dog_: 60-65 cm (23¾-25½ inches)

Are you coming to realise that choosing the BREEDER is the most important thing?
To make that even more definite:
You must decide EXACTLY what you wish to do with your pet, and choose a knowledgeable breeder whose sold stock is very successful in that activity. teh breeder will then tell you which 1 or 2 pups are most suitable for that purpose. The pattern & pigmentation won't matter, provided they feature black on top - whether those guard hairs are completely black (as with saddle-backs, blanket-backs. bi-colour and self-black), or black tipped with pale bases (as with gold sables, gray sables, black sables).

FAR more important than pattern & colour are the GSD's agility, attitude, behaviour, courage, determination, gait, health, size.
