Mobile phones started life as the two-way radio, which was also known as mobile rigs. These were used in vehicles such as taxi cabs, police cars & ambulances, although were not strictly mobile phones as they weren't normally connected to the phone network. Whilst the very first mobile phones were installed permanently in vehicles, later versions such as the transportables, also known as bag phones, could be carried, too, & can be used as portable or mobile two-way radios.
The earliest mobile phones are now referred to as first generation (1G) mobile phones.
The first hand held phone to be released onto the us market was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X in 1983. Mobile phones began to gain popularity in the 1980s with the introduction of cellphones that were based on cellular networks. Mobile phones were originally quite a bit larger than current ones, & they were first made for installation in vehicles only, which is why they were called the car phone. These chunky devices were later converted for use as transportable telephones the size of a small suitcase & the rest is history.
Second generation (2G) mobile phones first appeared in the 1990s. Unlike 1G phones that were analogue, 2G phones use digital signals to provide voice services and for SMS text messaging and internet access.
A handful of the advantages of 2G phones are that they use less strong radio signals, which need less battery power. This means that phones last longer between charges, so batteries - and therefore the telephones themselves - can be made tinier. In addition to this, 2G phones offer enhanced privacy. Indeed, digital telephone calls are much more difficult to eavesdrop on than 1-G phone calls.
The term 2.5G is used to refer to the telephone technology that is post 2G, but not quite 3-G. However, while the terms 2G and 3-G are officially defined, the term 2.5G is not. In fact, this definition was invented by marketing bosses only.
3-G is the term applied to the third generation of mobile phone standards & technology. 3-G follows 2G mobile phone technology.
The invention of 3-G technologies allow network operators such as Vodafone give their users a wider range of more advanced services. These include video calls & wireless internet.
Even though 3-G was introduced successfully to users across the world, some complaints have been made by both 3-G providers & users, which include pricey phones. In addition to this, there are numerous differences in the terms of licencing.
After 3G, we can look forward to the arrival of 4-G technology, which should be the best and most sophisticated mobile phone technology to date.
