KATANA AND KOREAN MARTIAL ARTS?

Many ITF (my friend is an instructot at one) and ATA TKD schools are now offering "Korean sword training". The sword they train with is a Katana and the techniques they use look a lot like Kendo. I was under the impression that traditionally Korea used swords similiar to the Chinese, like the Jian and Dao. I would imagine that that Korean swordsmanship would look more like Chinese, than Japanese swordplay. Please explain.
Im not saying any are better than worst. Im trying to get at historical accuracy.

This is because TKD schools want to teach something that is popular and well-known. Many many people have an interest in the samurai, so these schools prefer to teach the most common weapon to them. They are not actually "teaching" the weapon as much as they are showing a few moves to expand the knowledge of the students a bit, but few could be considered proficient.

I have been in Korea for 5 years now, and the only places I have seen a traditional Korean sword(short, straight bladed weapon) taught are not at any Taekwondo schools, but the few remaining Kuk Sul Won schools. There are many sword training schools here in Korea (almost as many at Taekwondo) and the vast majority of them are teaching what is Kendo (the Japanese art and bamboo practice katana)

Most involved with Taekwnodo know that it was influenced by Japanese arts, but I do not believe that is the reason many Taekwondo schools do things with the katana. I believe it is more or less marketing, and giving the students the option with the weapon that their heroes (samurai) used.
