The number 5.11 is today synonymous with tactical wear. There are 5.11 series of tactical pants, shirts, vests, underwear, 5.11 boots, and also other 5.11 things like flashlights, watches, and gun cases.
The tactical wear got its name when the manufacturers produced a type of slash pocket pants as rock climbing wear. It got the name 5.11 because under the Yosemite Decimal System used by mountain climbers to rate the difficulty of climbing, the rate of 5.11is a very tough one. Mountain climbing skills are rated from 5.0 to 5.10, the last being the toughest. So the next level, 5.11 is considered so tough that it is almost impossible. This climbing rubber, also known as sticky rubber, gives extremely good traction for climbing rocks or scaling walls. The extra traction is made possible by the chemical composition of the so-called sticky rubber and also because of the way the rubber configures the sole. Another way in which this climbing rubber helps is by providing traction when the sniper has to shoot lying face down.
Yet another feature in HRT 5.11 boots is the carbon based rubber outsole modified to be slip resistant and oil resistant to the utmost. An advantage of this type of rubber outsoles is that they will be silent, without producing the characteristic squeak that certain types of boots produce. Besides this, HRT 5.11 boots will also have a reinforced phylon heel inside, which will help while descending through ropes. Phylon is made of foam pellets of EVA, or ethylene vinyl acetate, which is compression molded to produce lightweight midsoles that will nevertheless give strong support.
Many 5.11 boots have Sympatex membrane lining. It is a sort of breathable fabric, which is windproof and waterproof. It keeps the user comfortable by keeping the feet dry while letting it breathe. Kevlar fiber, which is extra strong and heat resistant synthetic fibers, is used for the side panels of 5.11 boots. Kevlar is used in boots and body armor because of its good tensile strength, especially in comparison to its weight. It is considered five times as strong as steel of the same weight. The shock mitigation system used in 5.11 boots gives a rebounding effect and thus increases the wearer's comfort.
