How to Survive Basic Military Training: Eight Helpful Tips that Will See You Through

You really have to be diligent to make it past military basic training. To help you get through this tough training, you need to get as much rest as you can before training, always keep your mouth shut, follow exact orders, learn to play by the rules, eat all food prepared for you, never take things personally, never give up, and be nice to your fellow trainees.

Despite what you or others may think or say, being a part of military schools is very difficult. Even though there will always be surprises no matter how hard you prepare, it will help to know what to expect. Here are some tips that will help you get through military basic training:

Get as much rest as you can before training

Get plenty of rest before you begin the training. Relax and enjoy life.

Eat right and do not exhaust yourself physically

This will ensure your preparation for the tough military training you are about to endure.

Don't speak out of turn

Everyone who has ever gone through basic military training seems to say the same thing. Keep your mouth shut at all times unless they ask you something. Never seek sympathy,and never ever whine; otherwise you will be ridiculed and resented throughout your training. It is all part of the training and you need to get used to it.

Follow every order you are given, to the letter

Obedience and discipline are the keys to success in military training. Do exactly what you are told to word for word. Never miss a thing they tell you to do, and never make shortcuts, or you will suffer the consequences. Don't freak out when the orders pile up. Always pay attention and be quick all the time. Never be left behind, or you will not make it through training. You need to always remember, to never volunteer for additional chores. Remember, follow instructions exactly and to the letter.

Become accustomed to playing by the rules

In the military, the whole company is punished for the mistake of one soldier, so it pays well to play by the rules. Conform with the right daily routine, such as making up your bed and folding your clothes, and perform your chores correctly to avoid punishment.

Eat whatever they serve you

All that is essentially required in the armed forces lineup is imparted to you and how well you respond and assimilate all those inputs provided by them, especially with regards to the food they serve, is your complete responsibility. You will be physically exhausted every single day of your training, and you need to keep yourself fit all the time. You require nourishment, so do not waste your share of the food in the canteen. You probably even need to get used to vomiting several times during the first few days.

You shouldn't ever take anything too personally

Anything that happens in boot camp is part and parcel of the training regimen and is not intended to be a personal affront to you. The drill instructor in a military school deals with you in such a way as to foster all the essential qualities of an ideal soldier in you.

Keep on trying no matter what

No matter how physically and psychologically exhausted you are, never give up. Just giving up is not the proper attitude for a military soldier. Follow through and show everyone that you've got what it takes. Basic training is not for people who don't believe themselves capable of actually making the sacrifices needed to succeed in a military environment.

Your fellow trainees need to be treated well

Don't think that you are the only one undergoing the tough military basic training. Turning against your fellow trainees will make matters worse. You should attempt being nice and fitting in. Besides developing discipline, obedience, and physical strength, you will also learn teamwork and loyalty during military training.

Do you think there are a lot of people in the military with undiagnosed ADHD?

Considering the high-stress environment of the military, it sounds like the perfect place for someone with ADHD. Just a thought. It would be especially helpful if a veteran gave their opinion on it.

I'd love to reach through this screen and slap those people who think ADHD is a made up condition. My son has it, and I was very resistant to the idea of him not being able to control it with discipline alone. By the age of eight his school was threatening to expell him. Now understand that this was a good kid who in many ways was a model of behavior. He was raised in a good, disciplined home and his brother has no such issues. But his ADHD made it impossible for him to focus all day in a classroom.

Now, that being said, as he got older he did learn to reign in his condition and after the age of ten he no longer needed medication to control it. He still has it, and it still limits him, but he can function and excell. It takes him a lot of extra work though.

So where did he get this condition? Me. I've never been diagnosed with ADHD, but all my life I've struggled with personal discipline and with concentrating in school. I'm a pretty high IQ guy, but focus is tough. I've attempted to address the issue with martial arts training, meditation, exercise and holding myself to a high standard and this allows me to do well in the military. But to this day if I have to attend a class that last more than just a couple of hours, you'll see me standing in the back of the room so that I don't fall asleep or space out. It's one of the tricks I've learned to deal with the way my brain works.

So short answer: Yes. There are a lot. The enlisted ranks in the Army are crammed with people who didn't do to well on the college path. Many of them just aren't the brightest candles in the world in an academic sense. Some of them just wanted a more adventurous life. Some craved military discipline. Some have ADHD.
