Pink Eye - An Overview
Pink eye (medically known as conjunctivitis) is a medical condition in whihc the conjunctiva (the inner membranes of the eyelid and the outermost layer of the eyes) become inflamed. Pink eye can occur due to several reasons: bacterial or viral infection, exposure to contaminants or chemicals.
Pink eye is a common ailment which real name is conjunctivitis. The conjunctiva is a thin membrane that covers the white part of the eye ball.
Conjunctivitis is especially common in children because illnesses spread so quickly in daycares and schools. However, it's not just a problem that children have to endure. Many adults catch it from their children or end up with pink eye in some way or another.
The pink eye symptoms that you feel include:
Feeling that there's a foreign body in your eye
Itchiness or irritation of the eye and eyelids
A slight stinging pain
Sensitivity to light
Most likely, infectious pink eye spreads from one eye to the other and as the name suggests, this kind of pink eye is contagious. Non-infectious pinkeye on the other hand causes the eyes to have heavy tearing, itchiness and soreness.
Pink Eye starts in one eye and very often spreads to the other, usually due to touching your eyes and transferring it from one to the other. Be sure to wash your hands every time you touch your eyes so as not to spread the disease.
Eye baths are a common home remedy for pink eye, too. There are a number of different infusions and solutions used to combat the condition. Commonly, they are either applied as eyewash or with cotton balls.
Treatment For Pink Eye - Conjunctivitis: Doctors don't usually prescribe medication for Pink Eye, because it usually goes away on it's own within a few days. You must take some precauctions though with family members since Pink Eye can very easily spread to others.
Whenever there is any eye discharge, take a warm moist cloth and wipe the discharge immediately-this will help reduce the irritation your toddler may be undergoing.
Castor Oil - Put one to two drops in your eyes two times each day. Your eyes will get better within one day, but you should keep using it for a few more days to make sure it is completely gone. Your eyes will get blurry from the oil but it does not sting or hurt and in fact can be soothing. Castor oil is an antimicrobal and is excellent for healing.
For bacterial forms of conjunctivitis, antibiotics in the form of eye drops or ointment are the best treatment. This usually acts quickly to kill the bacteria that is causing pink eye, and you can usually resume your normal day-to-day activities after 24 hours of treatment.
Cool water: Pouring cool water on your eyes can help relieve a lot of the symptoms of pink eye. It helps reduce inflammation and pain in the eye by cooling your blood vessels and preventing further damage to your eyes.

POW - Prisoner of War:
Refers to an enemy soldier who is captured or surrenders to our forces during armed conflict or a declared state of war. He is treated in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.
MIA - Missing in Action:
A combatant is declared MIA when he is missing during wartime but it has not yet been established whether he/she has perished or has been captured by enemy forces.
KIA - Killed in action:
A combatant is declared KIA when there are confirmed reports indicating that he/she was killed during armed combat.
Semper Fidelis:
Literally translated from Latin, it means "Always Faithful."
