Is it hard to sew trendy clothes for someone who has never sewn before?
I am pretty good with my fine motor skills, so I am thinking about getting a sewing machine because I want to make fashionable clothes to wear. How hard is it to actually make clothes to wear? How hard is it to turn flared jeans into skinny jeans?
Learning to operate a sewing machine isn't too difficult. Learning how to sew a straight seam, a curved seam, and an angled seam isn't difficult. Making fashionable clothes from sewing patterns isn't too difficult either. However, trying to make fashionable clothes without patterns and going it alone is next to impossible. I give sewing lessons and one of my most popular sessions is "beginners in crisis: I didn't know you needed a pattern for that" It's filled with people who got in trouble because they tried to make their first garment without any pattern because they thought it would be easier and cheaper without one.
Use commercial pattern labelled "beginner" learn to sew or Easy when you start and make clothes with simple lines, silhouettes, and details and let the fabrics communicate your style. A simple straight skirt made in fine wool in a trendy colour is easy to make and to fit and will add a trendy note to any wardrobe. Once you understand grainline and how it relates to fit, the function and form of darts, seams and other fitting details, how to insert zippers, facings, linings, etc, then you can try to make a few original designs based on things you have or on patterns you have. If you find you enjoy making your on designs then you can try pattern making, which is a difficult skill to learn but worthwhile. Like many skills, there is a learning curve involved and your first things won't be perfect, but persevere and you will get better.
About.com's sewing site has some excellent resources for beginners. Simplicity.com has a line of patterns "It's so easy" that are excellent for first timers. They also have a good help section and offer e-mail based sewing lessons. The Reader's digest Sewing Book is one of the best, it has everything you need to know about how to sew. It's available at Amazon or you can look in the library for sewing books. Also, it's commonly found in used book stores, and much cheaper than a new copy. Kwik Sew Patterns has a special line for beginners called "learn to sew" and I use them in my beginner classes. Burda patterns and Burda Style offer free print at home patterns for download.
Buy patterns according to your measurements, not by the size you buy in stores, the two are not related to each other. You will take a larger size in a sewing pattern. When you use a patterns read all the instruction before cutting your fabric. All of them! Even the stuff on the first page and the glossary of terms and the boring stuff! It's all very important. Don't skip steps, combine steps or attempt to sew steps out of order for your first few projects.
