GPA of 2.75+
At least 1 year of studding the language
Open mind to different cultures
Willing to be challenged in school and academics

Hey there! I recently went to Japan this summer as a foreign exchange student, and let me say, it was great! Japan is probably the first place I would recommend for going on a foreign exchange, because the people are just so nice! My classmates still facebook/email/write to me, and they are so sweet. And, the food is great btw!
As for programs, I went through YFU! Such a reliable program. I'm currently hosting a student from Japan, which is nice!
There are other programs such as AFS Rotary CIEE AYUSA and ASSE.

As for the cost of things, my host family paid for everything. Maybe because I was only there for six weeks, but they were so generous! But yes, host families are required to pay for meals. At my school they gave me a uniform to use (because they have a lot of foreign exchange students a year, they always have extra uniforms handy) For most programs, you can't choose exactly where you want to go in Japan. But I'm sure wherever you go, it will be amazing! I stayed for 5 weeks in Hiroshima, and my host family had a second house near Tokyo.
