Should Winston Churchill be regarded as one of the great statesman of the 20th Century?
He vehemently opposed granting India its independence, and he congratulated Mussolini on his conquest of Ethiopia in 1936. That war saw the use of chemical weapons and many atrocities carried out by the fascist Italian army. He is most endured for his role as British Prime Minister during WWII. But should he be regarded as a great leader given his moral shortcomings.

He should because 'cometh the hour, cometh the man' and in early 1940 Churchill was that man. A washed-up joke in British politics in the 1930s, Churchill's stubbornness and refusal to face facts was just what was needed in the dark days of 1940/41 when the British had no way forward in the war.
BUT behind the mindless worship and desk-calendar quotes was a deeply flawed man. I don't think he was morally too bad (he recognised the threat of fascist Italy and was hardly a supporter of Mussolini, also it is likely that the use of chemical weapons in Ethiopia was highly exaggerated). But strategically he was a moron. Virtually every one of his interventions in strategy were a disaster: the over-reinforcement of France, invading Greece instead of finishing off the Italians in North Africa, putting everything into the bombing campaign, failing to equip Singapore with modern aircraft or good leaders, and sending the battleships Repulse and Prince of Wales to their destruction there. He ruthlessly sacrificed Canadian troops at Dieppe, and tried to hold Australian troops away from homeland defence in 1941/2.
He neglected the abundant evidence that British tanks were unequal to their German counterparts and thus British tankers never had a decent vehicle, and sacked or acquiesced in the removal of excellent leaders such as Hugh Dowding, Claude Auchinlek and, almost, William Slim. He was a sucker for self-important self-promoters such as Montgomery, Beaverbrook and Wingate.
In the closing weeks of the war, Churchill turned on Bomber Command and snubbed its leaders and crewmen who had carried out a policy enthusiastically supported by Churchill.
BUT, he kept Britain fighting, inspired US sympathy, and recognised the danger of Stalin.
