Is it better to Pilot fixed wing or rotary wing? Whats more fun? What gives you more satisfaction?
After having flown both, I prefer rotary wing. Airplanes are drama queens in disguise. the FAA mandates them to much stricter standards than helicopters. This is basically because both aircraft are built for different missions. I'll have to disagree with the second poster, I've logged several hours in a 172 and Have yet to fly a helicopter that would not out run a 172. Yes, helicopter's are slower than most high speed airplanes, but, You can take a helicopter and hover through downtown New Orleans.
As poster one said, it's all in what you are looking for. Flying a helicopter is much more personal. It's hands on most of the time and requires you to use more piloting ability more of the time. Not to take away from fixed wing pilot's, just saying helicopters require more finesse.
I never liked the idea of having to use a runway every time you want or need to land. I've taken a helicopter and landed on a small sandy island out in the middle of a bay. If you, by chance, get yourself in a bind with weather (and you will one day) a helicopter, in its design will give you a few more options ie.. land in a field until the fog clears!
