Can sound cause explosives to detonate?
I was thinking about this in relation to the IED threat to soldiers in Afghanistan. Could sound be used to detonate IEDs remotely, perhaps through burying the source in the ground? I know that ultrasound is already being used in Chemistry to speed up reaction times in industry. Can the vibrations in sound excite the particles in primary(very sensitive) explosives enough to make them detonate with no other outside stimuli?
In theory...With a High Explosive, its the intense shockwave from the detonator which travels through the explosive splitting the molecules and releasing the energy, This shock wave is technically a very powerful "soundwave" so in that respect yes. The trouble is it needs to be extremly powerful and emminate from inside the charge, A subwoofer speaker basically sends pulses through the air like a shockwave, but nowhere near with the power or intensity required to set off a high explosive charge,
Primary explosives as u say are very sensitive and used in the detonator, and could possibly detonate of VERY close to a VERY low frequency sound, but it wold be too "hit and miss" for IED or mine clearance, and if it did go off that close it would destroy the equipment,
