If most video game remakes are dinosaurs trying desperately to find their place in a world that is long passed them, Tactics Ogre: Let us cling together is what would happen if a dinosaur cleaned up, got his act together and it managed to work his way up to a steady job in middle management. No, actually, it's more than that. Tactics Ogre - in some incredibly clever ways - speeds right past his modern contemporaries. Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics, et al, take note because this is how it's done.

Tactics Ogre: Let us cling together is an amazing modern recreation of a 16 year old game. Oh, sure, it may not look like bump-mapped Frankenstein child of Unreal 3, CryEngine 2, and Snake's oddly realistic facial from Peace Walker, but it's not the point.Tactics Ogre is proactive, where it really counts, to a series of "why has nobody ever thought of it before?" Changes in the tried and true strategy RPG formula. Before we get into all the nitty gritty stuff, though, let's start with the basics.
If you've ever played a strategy RPG, you will more or less ready to cannonball right into the deep end here. You install a small troupe of characters on the battlefield, and everyone turns politely exchanging battle until one side says "Oh, I say, I think I've had enough, sir." Only it comes out more like "aaaargghhh [blood gargling sound]" because, you know, sword. The basic mechanics, it is simple and easy to understand. Select a square, move to it and perform an action. Rinse, repeat.
Make no mistake, though: Let us cling together is quite ruthless in relation to the challenge and will not hesitate to take your head clean off if it is not in the game. But generally it is not unreasonable. AI simply goes for the jugular when you leave yourself open. Really, the game's only case of artificial difficulties due almost insanely suicidal friendly NPCs. Even when your ability to complete a level, which depends on their survival, they will wade fearlessly into the thick of battle, typically results in an NPC pincushion that is equal parts sword, arrows and fire. Translation: Game Over.
Even then, Let us Cling Together is still a step ahead of the curve. Using a new feature called Chariot Tarot, you can rewind up to 50 laps, when you want, handily clean slate for all your messy mistakes. (Of course, it's completely optional, so the game can essentially be as hard or easy as you'd like.) It's the kind of things that we sincerely hope will be a genre mainstay, since there is really no downside to it. We're sure you've had a million "wow, if I had not done that incredibly obvious slip-up a few times since, would character X still be alive right now" moments - only you probably said it with a lot more not-fit-for-print blasphemy. Chariot Tarot However, trampling all over this frustration by accelerating the process. You should reload, fighting back to this point and doing everything right anyway, so why not just skip straight to the part that counts?
Of course games themselves are just the tip of Tactics Ogre's iceberg. And the other major component? Well, it will largely decide whether the game is a must-buy or a must-avoid-at-all cost to you. So without further ado, try this word on the size: ". Micro-Management" If the idea of carefully tweaking every character in your army, you excitedly fondling your calculator, then Tactics Ogre is almost absurdly wide breadth of customization options are just what the doctor ordered. Hours may (and probably will) fly by as you mix and match numerous weapons, skills and classes to create your dream team. But the game puts a limit on the number of skills a character can choose from at a time, so ninja dragon guides who give birth to entire universes, each time they floss their teeth are out of the question. Instead, you must form your team carefully, with particular emphasis on how everyone's skills and specializations fit to form a larger whole.
If you'd rather just jump straight into the action without any of this number-crunching nonsense, but then Tactics Ogre probably not the game for you. Even with an optional auto-equipment operation, it is still up to you to teach each character all their spells and abilities one by one. The fact is that in Tactics Ogre, what goes on behind the scenes issues just as much as all the sword swinging and spell slinging, so if you're looking for a mindless distraction to download and play, look elsewhere.
But if that's your cup of tea carefully blended, so you will probably question how you ever lived without Let us cling together is smart, practical tweaks to the system. Foremost, instead of ladling out experience points each character, distributes it in play between the whole class. As a result, if one cleric hits level seven, so that all clergy, you have ever had and will always create will also automatically start at level seven. In other words, say goodbye to boring afternoons spent leveling neglected characters. Unfortunately, newly unlocked classes start at level one, and bring them into line with your other meteor-sling, time-bending ultra-classes can be a bit of a chore.
Let us cling together the history, meanwhile, is almost uniformly excellent, with choices that puts most of today's modern fairy tales to shame. There is a save starving orphans / starve a recently saved rare nonsense. Instead you will be asked to do what you think is right given the situation at hand, and the game changes - and we mean really changes - everything about the consequences. The whole "idealistic young rebel" motif may not sound like anything special, but let us Cling Together pulls it off with a maturity that RPGs in general could use more of. The game again translated much better script certainly helps as well.
But wait, there's more to the story's, uh, history. In another step, which we really hope to see other games openly copy, let us cling together "The World" feature allows you to jump in Ye Olde DeLorean and zip back in time to pivotal plot moments. In doing so, you are able to make quite different choices and keep playing to see how the story unfolds.Again, it's fast, easy and gives real insight into the weight behind your decisions - unlike other games, which essentially say, "Oh man, that was a big deal. No, I'm not gonna give you a reason. Why would I ever do a stupid thing like that? "
Less impressive, however, let us cling together the multiplayer. Instead of putting both you and your opponent in direct control of the matter, watching the game you trade custom AI versions of your characters - ghost data, in essence. It's not a bad idea by any means, but a real ad hoc versus mode would have been nice.

Granted, it's a minor omission in the grand scheme of such a colossal, value-filled package, and it's hardly a deal-breaker. All told, since Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together sets a new gold standard for both the PSP strategy RPG and properties in general. With the PSP's top long in the past and its twilight years almost over, it's nice to see that the console still has at least one very potent trick up his sleeve. So dust your poor, abandoned laptop one last time. Confident that NGP's just around the corner, but it's a pretty good way to go.
