Some History on How They Got to Where They Are
The fixed blade knife has a history that goes back almost as far as man himself. When the caveman figured out that a sharpen piece of rock or wood would cut better than a round one he started trying to sharpen anything that he had to make the job of hunting easier. Bone on a stick to make a spear, rock on a stick to make a hatchet, a piece of wood tampered to one edge to make a club. These were all tools that led up to the knife that is used today; it still provides strength and versatility in the jobs that it is designed to do. Today you can get knives designed for special tasks such as hunting which is designed for cutting and not so much for stabbing. Skinning knives are used for skinning game out in the field. Boning knives are made for deboning game and meat to make easier to carry out of the field and so it will be boneless and lighter to carry. Filleting knives are long blades that are usually flexible compared to hunting style knives. Filleting knives need the flexibility to carve along the bones removing as much of the meat as possible.
Technology over the years has made the solid blade knife more specialized in each field, while keeping the strength it has always been known for. In the frontier days the knife was an all around tool, used for hunting, cutting wood, personal hygiene, protection. It may be used to carve a canoe in the morning or to shave one's face, then be used to skin game killed for food and used to cut the meat for dinner. The steel blade knife was a very valuable tool in the settling of the old west. It had to be strong keep a sharp edge for long periods of time and include many of the characteristics of the specialized tools of today.
The one piece knife has many uses in the self protection field also, there are boot knifes, necklace knives, and push knives that are illegal in most of the United States. Throwing knives are also a solid blade knife that is used for contests more than anything today, but could also be used for self defense. The idea that the fixed blade knife can be used for anything from decoration to hunting and survival in the wild or on the street makes it a sound investment in one's self protection and these days with the economy at an all time low we are all more responsible for our own protection.
Fixed blade knives are carried in a sheath either on the belt front or back, on the side, or in a shoulder holster on either side. This makes the fixed blade knife an everyday tool.
The solid blade knife has a long history in the development of the world as one of the first weapons or tools that was used by man. What would be some good majors in college if I wanted to be an officer in the United States Marine Corps?
Hey. I wanted to be an officer in the United States Marine Corps. But, I am not sure what to major in.
Can someone tell me some good majors that would be good for my future career?
Also, I have a side question, after my career in the USMC, I was planning on running in political offices. What would be a good minor for this?
Since it does not matter what your degree is in, make it something that you like. As you get to the last year of college, you will find it really hard to do well in your classes if you just don't care about the material. You could pick engineering, and that would sound good, but you may lose interest in the coursework and not finish. Or you could pick psychology, ace all of your classes, and have a great college career. It is up to you, but I don't think that it would be possible to get a degree in something that you are not interested in.
