"The French T. S. Eliot" Paul Valery And "the Mind Of Europe"
1. "The Mind of Europe"
The equally modernists T.S. Eliot and William Carlos Williams represent two diametrically opposed but mutually dependent philosophies of history, in other words, they represent two related definitions of the word ‘Modern'. To try and understand this we must go deeper. It is interesting to turn to a metaphor by Nietzsche, which served as kind of his legacy to Modernism. The metaphor is "the mind of Europe". Nietzsche perceived a psychological pattern in the history of European culture, and therefore he thought Europe had a ‘mind'. Freud, at nearly the same time, would borrow similar pattern as a construct while structuring psychoanalysis; analytic therapy, in fact. In turn, Eliot formulated this very pattern in his poem Four Quartets (Number 3 - The Dry Savages), and I quote: "the way up is the way down, the way forward is the way back". When we think of Freud, we see instant resemblance in the way forward being the way back, because psychoanalytically the way to analyze forward events is to analyze what has already occurred (regression).
2. The Case of Paul Valéry
Paul Valéry, who is often called the French T. S. Eliot, was less paradoxical than Nietzsche, Freud or Eliot, and therefore more helpful for our purposes. A lengthy quotation follows (mind you this is not a translation from French, Valéry actually published the full essay in an English journal of London):
"An extraordinary shudder ran through the marrow of Europe. She felt in every nucleus of her mind that she was no longer the same, that she was no longer herself, that she was about to lose consciousness, a consciousness acquired through centuries of bearable calamities (…) So -- as though in desperate defense of her own physiological being and resources -- all her memory confusedly returned. Her great men and her great books came back pell-mell(…)And in the same disorder of mind, at the summons of the same anguish, all cultivated Europe underwent the rapid revival of her innumerable ways of thought (…) she sought refuge, guidance, consolation throughout the whole register of her memories, past acts, and ancestral attitudes. Such are the known effects of anxiety."
Valéry described this process in 1919, at the close of WWI, naturally as a reaction to it. The anxiety he refers to is the doubt about the direction towards which the present was heading, since the war had shaken present unstable, there was a clear dissatisfaction which less and less could help man achieve connection with any sort of authentic selfhood or memory.
Valéry calls this situation a disorder of mind, much as Freud does, and yet, he (Valéry) complements it by saying that the status quo mandates a self analysis, which, again, Freud was performing at the time. In other words, the post-war generation was demanding an evaluation, a sort of therapy, to achieve relief through whatever memories that could be retrieved and authenticated.
If the process proved successful, Valéry called it reintegration, or revitalization, or even - why not – a new Renaissance. With this reintegration, the present would be made livable and tolerable because of its legitimate reinterpretation of the past. That was the paleomodernist cue. That was what other critics than Kermode called it Classic Modernism.

There was no such thing as the Triple Entente in the Second World War. There were simply the Allied Powers. The "Big Three", as they were dubbed, were the British Empire, the United States, and the Soviet Union. France was an Allied power, but was occupied from 1940-1944; agents of the Free French fought alongside the Allies, and undertook sabotage missions against the Nazi and Vichy governments in France.
Other members of the Allies included China (who fought long and hard against Japan), Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (functionally independent countries who fought along Britain).
